With estimate of nearly 17.2 million civillian casualties, 9.13 as a result of conventional bombing and use of chemical and biological weapons and crossfire during the invasion and another 8.4 in the massacres and systematic public rape and murder and spontanious massacres (the zenith after the fall of Nanking, just after the loss of the capitol, within a year of the invasion); numerically almost three European Holochausts, in horror and dehumanisation, incomparable, took place in an 'incident' simply thought of as a prelude to Japan's involvement in WWII. Most people I know aren't aware that the Chinese and Japanese were NOT allies. Japanese atrocities in China are still a matter of diplomatic tension between the two nations, though somewhat marginalised compared even to the Japanese treatment of White POWs.
